Gender, Seed Trials Management & Weather Intelligence

I had the honor of working as a Gender Expert Consultant with TomorrowNow OSIRIS Gates Foundation Project Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation TomorrowNow.org for the past 5 months, focusing on gender roles in seed trial management in agriculture and the relevance of weather intelligence in Kenya and Rwanda @Georgina Campbell Flatter @Philip Frost @Asiedua Amoah During this time, I had the opportunity to visit Kenya Agricultural Research and Livestock Organization (KALRO) in Katumani, Kenya, and One Acre Fund Headquarters in Karongi, Rwanda, where I engaged with scientists, technical experts, and small-holder farmers @ Ronald Diang’a @Kenneth Chepkwony

The aim of this project was to enhance the usability of weather data for operational staff at 1000 farms in Kenya and Rwanda by designing decision support tools that take into consideration the gender perspectives of farmers. Given that female farmers make up the majority of smallholder farmers and are particularly impacted by climate change in Kenya and Rwanda, it is crucial to incorporate gender perspectives in climate-resilient seed trial management and weather intelligence.
